any other suggestions which Mr.May has
made for reducing the cost of the police
but whatever steps in this or other
departments are actually taken must be
clearly reported for my information, as
it is becoming increasingly difficult
to ascertain what retrenchments have
been effected, and what are still mere-
ly proposals to be carried out on
vacancy.

Superintendent of Police should take
charge of the Gaol, and that the duties
of the fire brigade should be entrusted
